ALVS will began accepting applications for the SALUTE Honor society in January. The qualifications are as follows:

  • 3.0 Cumulative GPA for Under Grad student

  • 3.5 Cumulative GPA for Grad Student

  • Veteran w/ copy of DD-214 or Active w/ copy of orders

  • One time fee of $20

International Children's Carnival

Sunday, March 25th, 2012 from 2-5pm the Lory Student Center's Main Ballroom will be hosting the International Children's Carnival.  Celebrate diverse cultures with international games, crafts, dance, storytelling, a stage show, and a fashion show!

This event is FREE with a student I.D., with a $5 requested donation per family.  For youth ages 3-12 years old, (must be accompanied by an adult).

Laptop Give Away

The ALVS office has a new ACER 11.6" laptop to give away to a student veteran.  To be considered for this award you must:

  • have a 2.0+ GPA;
  • have 89 or less credits;
  • be enrolled in 12+ residential credits;
  • demonstrate a sound academic plan to graduation;
  • demonstrate financial need.

If you qualify, you must provide a letter that includes the following:

  • Name
  • Address
  • CSU ID
  • Branch
  • Years of Service
  • Major
  • Name of Advisor
  • Number of credits
  • Cumulative CSU GPA
  • Why you chose CSU for your degree
  • Intended date of graduation, and coursework to complete
  • Career goal
  • Explain how having a laptop computer would help you

You also need to attach a copy of your DD-214 and your financial award information that you can get on RAMWeb.  Submit all required material to Jenny Pickett at Jennifer.pickett@colostate.edu or drop it off at the ALVS office.

The deadline for submitting your application letter is Friday, March 23, 2012 by 5pm.


Border Wars Shoot-Off:

The Border Wars Shoot-Off between the SVO's at CSU and the University of Wyoming is locked, cocked, and ready to rock!  The range is pretty awesome, with up to 1,000 yard shots to be made.  Stop by the ALVS office and talk to John with any questions you might have, but the general info is as such:

Who:  Veterans

Date/Time/Location:  Saturday, April 21st, 2012 @ 0900 in Laramie, WY.  (a make-up date of April 28th, 2012 is also set up, just in case of some crazy Wyoming weather).

Carpool:  Everyone will be meeting up in the North End parking lot of the LSC at 0600.

Fee:  There is a $20 range fee, that includes targets

Weapons/Ammo:  Bring whatever rifle(s)/pistol(s) you have, and ammo to shoot.

How to register:  If you're on the ALVS mailing list then you should have a registration form in your email, but you can also come into the ALVS office and we can get you squared away.

 

New Printer/Scanner in the ALVS Office:

Copies are still 10 cents/page, but now you can also scan documents.  Back-to-back copies are 10 cents/side.

 

Carpool:

An ALVS student who normally rides the bus is looking to find someone to carpool with from CSU to the Poudre Valley Hospital area of town on nights throughout the week where she has to stay past 7pm (end of bus schedule) If you stay on campus until after 7pm and are willing to help, please either email the ALVS Staff or come into the ALVS office and let us know.

SVO is now accepting membership applications. There is a new one time ten dollar fee to be a part of the SVO. Stop by the ALVS office to complete your application.

Academic Help for Academic Success:

 

CO150 Compostition Placement/Challenge Exam Dates:
Registration For Fall 2012 Semester. The Composition Placement/Challenge Exam is a 60-minute impromptu summary-response essay test. Students can check their placement on the afternoon following the day of their exam by checking their Homepage on RAMweb. Under Records, select Composition Placement/Challenge Exam Results. Exam Dates: 3/29, 4/11, 4/19, 4/26, 6/11

Please remember to bring a PEN and a PHOTO ID!! You don’t need to sign up for this test, just show up 10-15 minutes early--no one arriving late will be allowed to take the test!! All students taking this exam will be assessed an $18 service charge, which will be billed to their student account.

 

Math Tutoring:

Additional Help with PACe Minicourses (MATH 117-126):
In depth tutoring sessions are now being offered for Adult and Veteran Students enrolled in PACe Courses. Help with both math material and TI calculators will be provided. Drop in sessions are in Weber 136A:

Scholarships and Awards:

 

Tillman Military Scholarship:

The Tillman Military Scholars application started accepting applications on Monday, February 13. The application will remain open until 11:59:59 PM PST on Friday, March 16. For criteria and required documents visit http://www.pattillmanfoundation.org/tillman-military-scholars/apply/.

 

Dream What You Love Scholarship for Single Parent Students ($500 scholarship):

The Dream What you Love Scholarship for Student Parents was established by Diane Ellsworth, CSU alum and former employee to provide financial assistance to a student who meets the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate, full-time student enrolled in 12 or more credits;
  • Minimum CSU accumulative GPA of 2.0;
  • Preference will be given to single parents with sole custody.

Complete application packets include the following:

  • Completed application form (obtained from ALVS)
  • Current resume
  • Financial award information

The deadline to submit your application to the ALVS office has been extended to March 26th, 2012


Osher Re-entry Scholarship (up to 20x - ~$4000 scholarships):

The Osher Re-entry Scholarship was established by the Bernard Osher Foundation to provide financial assistance to former undergraduate students who are re-entering the university, and who meet the following criteria:

  • Will be an undergraduate, full-time student enrolled in 12 or more credits for duration of the scholarship term;
  • Minimum CSU accumulative GPA of 2.75;
  • Minimum of 60 credits towards bachelor's degree;
  • Culmative gap of at least five years in education;
  • Be between the ages of 25-50.

Complete application packets include the following:

  • Complete a FAFSA form for CSU - visit www.fafsa.ed.gov to file your FAFSA (This will be used to determine "financial need");
  • Submit one letter of reference from a current or recent employer (or volunteer work supervisor) focusing on quality of your work and overall work ethic addressed to the ORS Selection Committee;
  • Submit a copy of your award letter obtained from your RamWeb. This should contain a list of the awards and scholarships you've received for the upcoming academic year;
  • Answer the following questions. Please limit answer to each single question to no more than two pages, using double space, Times New Roman, 12 point font (1 inch margins on each side): 
  1)  What motivates you to seek a bachelor's degree?
  2)  What obstacles have you faced in completing your bachelor's degree?  Why do you think you will now be able to overcome those obstacles?
  3)  What are your goals for the 10 years following graduation? Be specific.

American Association of University Women Scholarship (2x - $2000 scholarships):

The American Association of University Women is a national organization promoting societal change, equity for women, education, and self-development over the life spans.  Undergraduate scholarships are available for women who meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate (w/no previous Bachelor's degree), upper class (Jr. or Sr. standing), non-traditional female student.  (Non-traditional:  1st generation college, over 22 yrs old, parent, widowed, prior military, medical condition that delayed schooling, under-represented field of study, ie. Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math);
  • Minimum CSU accumulative GPA of 3.0;
  • Demonstrated financial need;
  • Can't be previous recipient of an AAUW scholarship

Complete application packets include the following:

  • Completed application form (obtained from ALVS office)
  • Official copy of applicant's college transcript(s), (must be sealed, but not required to be sent directly from school)

The deadline for your application and transcript(s) to be received by the ALVS office is May 4th, 2012


WomenGive Scholarship (up to $200/week/child scholarships):

Education is an integral component to self-sufficiency. WomenGive makes an impact by providing childcare scholarships to single mothers working toward a GED, certificate or bachelor’s degree program.

Attention all OIF/OEF veterans of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is a group that has been formed to help you out if you're having a bit of a rough time dealing with any kind of new challenges that you may be facing in your civilian life. Be it relationship, anxiety, depression, or just simply wanting to hang out with some vets because you miss the feeling, this is the group for you. It's run by an OIF veteran, and meets:

SLICE:

The Office for Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement (SLICE) is now accepting volunteers for the 2012 Project Homeless Connect event.

When and Where: April 20, 2012 at the Aztlan Community Center in Old Town.

All volunteers receive a free t-shirt, a 1-hour volunteer training, and free transportation to/from the event from the CSU transit center

O*Net Updates - Updated Military Occupations:

The Military Occupational Classification (MOC) crosswalk has been updated by the Department of Defense (January 2012) and incorporated into O*NET OnLine and My Next Move for Veterans. Over 10,000 MOC occupations are linked to related O*NET-SOC occupations. Transitioning military personnel can use their military code or title to discover related civilian occupations/careers within O*NET Online's Military Crosswalk Search or My Next Move for Veterans' Military Transition Search.

1) Student Veteran:

Organizations to Volunteer for RamRide:

If you have/belong to an organization here at CSU and want to volunteer for RamRide you can make money for you organization! For Friday and Saturday nights you can earn $10/volunteer (minimum of 6 volunteers) and for Thursday nights you can earn $12/volunteer. Hours are as stated: Friday and Saturday nights - 8pm-3am

Thursday nights - 8pm-2am

An increasing pay scale also exists, so if your organization volunteers multiple times in a semester, you make more money each time per volunteer.
